Hello fellow ice racers, I used an alternative to Menards in 13" from Finland. They're called Black Rockets 342 studs per tire. The studs stick out 3/16th and 3/4 are buried/glued into tire. The studs are semi pointed come to a flat blunt carbide tip. Its unfortunate for Menards to not care enough to make they're tires available to anyone because of a lame excuse like the mold is broken . FIX IT and make us some tires . How much money has Menards made over the years . Irritating or what. I understand that 13" isn't the most common anymore but a 27" tall 14" tire is a complete waste of time and money and who can spin that semi tire without 3000 hp. Black Rockets kick the crap out of Menards for traction and design . The stud blocks are square and flat give way better forward and side ways traction in deep snow or ice . BRs also come in many different sizes and keeps your gear ratio the same as it should . Example I bought 155 13 from BR and it shorter than a Menards 155 13 by an inch well now my gear box works without throwing money at it .BR has a lower profile 13 also. They have the best selection of sizes period . The unfortuate part of all of this is the BRs are 300 each by the time you get it . approx. If Menards was making 13 I would consider them first. The price is right at $ 215 per. Here`s the link to the BR tire company. www.keskipinta.fi/pages/WINTER_RALLY_TYRES/1019. I hope I didn`t offend anyone but I`ve observing this for 20 years avoiding studded racing because of this BS . The last thing I want to do is purchase a set of tires that are discontinued (Menards) . Wake up Menards. Always about the money eh. FYI the BRs still allow the car to drift out and slip like the Menards just add more throttle to pull you through.( this is ice racing ) Vs a home made pro gold stud tire that is basically a road race tire for ice and only destroys the ice no sliping just pure traction. What fun is that go road racing instead. If anyone wants to ask me about BR please feel free to do so. Al Marcoux IRD WSCC 2013,12,11. 204 291 7006 call or text almarcoux at mymts.net

the last menards I purchased for the states landed in thunder bay was about $520 per pair and lasted 4 race days before they were junk, the last pair of menards purchased here (new from another racer) were aged for 1 year before being mounted and lasted the same length of time which is why I built my own tires the were cheaper and lasted the same amount of time before having to modify the stud height for about 1/2 the price, yes it does involve some manual labour but you had to build the car why not tires Don

as for the comments about Menard making money on the tires, I don't believe it's as much as you believe or someone would have bought the outfit and made millions on it. As far as I'm concerned Menard was making tires because he came from ice racing, I raced with him in the early 90"s and he bought the tire making equipment from J Lindorfer due to Johns untimely death and has been making them due to loyalty to the sport. The only reason I figured out how to build tires is due to the fact this is grass roots racing and there is always an alternative to products out there that cost alot of money, I believe the screw and washer setup used in Winnipeg is an example, the problem with that is ice consumption and price ( I believe the price worked out to about $1 per screw plus the tires must be shaved which we can not do here). ( even though my tires are cheaper to build) I believe that we in the future will have to find an alternative to menards but the tires you showed us look like tire with grip studs screwed into the and cost is aproximately $1 per stud to buy before installation, I can't remember the name of the same stud here in canada but checkout www.gripstuds.com/ well thats my 2 cents hope to visit the track this season Don

I've discussed using them with a couple of guys in the states (IIRA) 1, cost of studs ended up at $1 per stud 2, we determined that if we tore studs out that were molded in we would definately lose studs that were screwed in 3, the gentleman who brought the studs to the party didn't build tires to test the winnipeg studs ended up about the same cost and parts availiblity was not there I ended up building tires and testing them out of my own pocket and with my crew and my wife (I never would have been able to do it without them) Don

Ok so no real testing . I noticed that TBAC and IIRA are both maxing out the stud height at 3/16 and studs per foot at 28 . The magnum series doesn't say just menards and rubber.
I like 3/16 it make sense.
Last year we ran the brunno wessel studs and well they tear out and the hole left behind prevents you from putting another stud in thus having to buy new tires and restudding . Some guys bought 12 or more tire to finish the season I stopped at 8 and dropped out of the points. These were barely better than rubber .
I ran Menards then BRs for testing. The BRs are way better o/all. Still loosing some studs but that' s the way it goes if your not loosing studs you're probly not going fast enough.
This year I left that stud rule open to see what happens and now the top 6 are road racing on ice and the rest of are ice racing .
We need to figure out a way to get a tire mold made with just blocks of rubber to hold the Grip studs or what ever .
The Black Rockets block design is unbelievable in the snow the square flat sides act like paddles spraying the snow away from the tire sorta like a rubber tire with sipes throwing snow out leaving it clear for more .
Do you know anyone that can help with rubber hardness? We would need I think hard rubber to hold the studs in and less flex.
Winnipeg has a few retreading companies and my buddy has a cnc milling machine so making the mold is doable it's just how much will it cost and can we spread the cost .
Big picture we need to come to an agreement on the design.
I just realized that the wpg studs are gold pro racing studs with 5/16 height and 5/16 head at 18 ish per foot . No wonder the Menards have no chance. Gonna try the BRs next and compare with our wpg studs.
This design destroys the track in less than a day. 6 cars make 6" ruts in no time . Slot car racing. And they're still whining . Wait til the bolt head is shortened by half.
They don't slide just point and floor it . So even a crappy driver looks like Ken Block.

I noticed that TBAC and IIRA are both maxing out the stud height at 3/16 and studs per foot at 28 . The magnum series doesn't say just menards and rubber. I tried to keep the traction equal to Menards so if people want to stay with Menards they could
I like 3/16 it make sense. the same height as Menards

We need to figure out a way to get a tire mold made with just blocks of rubber to hold the Grip studs or what ever . when I started racing in the 80's the previous version of studded tire were molded as slicks and tread was cut into them with a hot knife tire regroover and the stud holes were drilled in and the studs were spun in with a dril after being dipped in antifreeze
The Black Rockets block design is unbelievable in the snow the square flat sides act like paddles spraying the snow away from the tire sorta like a rubber tire with sipes throwing snow out leaving it clear for more . the same idea behind the dogbone design
Do you know anyone that can help with rubber hardness? We would need I think hard rubber to hold the studs in and less flex. you should go talk to dirt track racers and find out who has a Tire Durometer -it checks the hardnes of the tire

ONLY 6 INCHES - I remember when I started racing in 85 IIRA would go through 12 - 16 inches of ice in a 2 hour endurance race, a friend drove a mini and on the cooldown lap he high centered in the corner and we had to go tow him off the corner which is why Menard went to the straight shank stud to cut down on track wear
I hope I've been able to give some insight into what Hupe Cheater tires tried to do Checkout "Hupe''s Cheater Studs 2" on facebook for more information Don
